Interview with potter Mamie Yamamoto
[The following are the artists of the cups used at [M KYOTO CAFE by Leaf].
Creating works for exhibitions and making vessels for daily use. Each has its own characteristics and charm, says Ms. Mamie Yamamoto.
We asked him about why he started making ceramics, his works, and his thoughts on the future.
Please enjoy the exhibition while relaxing at the café.
1.How did you get started in ceramics?
In the fourth grade of elementary school, I began to understand how to look at things, and from there, drawing became fun. I became interested in three-dimensional objects as well as painting at an art high school, and I was attracted to clay, so I went on to major in ceramics at [Kyoto City University of Arts]. My work, going back and forth between two and three dimensional objects, hasn't changed since I was a student there."
I am currently working as an adjunct faculty member at a university while continuing to make both works for exhibitions and daily vessels. Several years ago, I found some tableware used by my great-grandfather at my parents' house and became interested in it, and intuitively decided I wanted to try my hand at it. I feel that there is a different appeal to vessels that become a part of someone's life than to making artwork."
2.Please tell us about the "features" of this work and your "thoughts on the work".
I think of my work as a positive process of carving the surface of the clay to reflect the scenery of a certain time. On the other hand, for vessels, I think it's important to have a refreshing design that you don't mind using every day, or to remove the negative aspects of the work."
The cups you will be using this time are designed to take advantage of the texture of the iron-rich, coarse clay. After prototyping, I improved it by actually using it for about a month, drinking, washing, and wiping it myself. I hope you find it easy to use."
3.About future developments
I spend more time on production as a contemporary ceramic artist, but ideally, I would like to keep a 50-50 balance between my artwork and my vessels. By doing both, my awareness of each comes and goes. Both are indispensable for me. I am also thinking of setting up an online store where you can purchase my vessels."
