Kyo Saron - Monk Cafe" will be held four times from May 27 (Sat.), inviting monks from temples in the Kansai region as lecturers to share their knowledge on how to appreciate Buddhist statues and episodes related to temples, as well as to talk with monks. Let's learn about the familiarity of temples and monks, and the "heart" that monks have acquired through their ascetic practices.
A portion of the participation fee for this event is donated to each temple each time to be used for the protection of cultural assets.
The venue is Together&Co. restaurant on the first floor of Hilton Garden Inn Kyoto Shijo-Karasuma, which opened last fall. The relaxed atmosphere and free-flowing coffee and tea will be a great attraction.
The first session will be given by Myoshun Tsuji, chief steward of Kofukuji Temple, the head temple of the Hosso sect of Buddhism. The theme of the session will be "Kofukuji: The Secrets of Ashura," featuring the statue of Ashura (a national treasure) in the Kofukuji collection. After the lecture, participants can enjoy a frank conversation with the lecturer about their usual questions and behind-the-scenes stories of the temple.
