The Shiki Theatre Company's musical "The Bells of Notre Dame" will be performed in Kyoto from Sunday, December 18, 2022 to Sunday, April 9, 2023 at the Kyoto Theater.
The Bells of Notre Dame is based on "Notre Dame de Paris" written by Victor Hugo, the world-renowned literary giant who created masterpieces such as "Les Miserables". As a musical, it was first performed in the United States in 2014 and opened in Japan in Tokyo in 2016.
Set in Paris at the end of the 15th century, it is a deep human drama and love story about Casimodo, who lives in the bell tower of Notre Dame Cathedral, Frollo, the grand deacon of the cathedral, Phoebus, the captain of its guard, and Esmeralda, a gypsy dancer to whom the three have feelings, and a popular musical with a shocking ending.
Tatsuro Iida
This is the third time the play has been performed at the Kyoto Theatre in about three years. Tatsuro Iida, one of the actors playing the role of Casimodo and who has played the lead role since the first performance, took the stage at the interview, where Iida, who has played the role 300 times since the first performance in 2016, shared his enthusiasm for the show.
When asked about the role of Kazimodo, he replied, "After playing Kazimodo about 100 times, I felt that the role was getting closer and closer to me, fitting with my breathing. I have played various roles in other productions, but this role is the closest to me, and I feel as if I am acting naturally or breathing there. Rather than playing a character according to a script, I feel that I am now more in tune with him," he said.
He added, "I realized how much I could overlap with the role, and it was a role that changed my life in the theater. I felt that the role chose me. It's challenging, I don't feel emotionally exhausted, and I would like to continue playing the role of Casimodo.
When he played the role of Kazimodo, he said, "I can't explain how I cried at the ending of this film. I don't know whether to call it emotional or sad, but I have cried 100 times after seeing it about 100 times. Kazimodo is a mass of negative elements, but as the curtain call approaches, I can see that the audience's hearts are being beautifully purified as they journey through the play together with the audience. I always feel happy to be a part of that purification.
When asked what kind of people he would like to see the film, he replied, "The theme of the film is 'acceptance of others,' and the content can be accepted by all generations, but I especially want students to see the film before they go out into society. I would like students in particular to watch this film before they go out into the world. I would like them to see the prejudices they have and the tendencies of their own minds, and to feel how their own minds work when they watch this film. I hope you will take the time to watch this film, which makes you think about the ugliness and beauty of the human heart.
It will be held at the Kyoto Theater until Sunday, April 9, 2023 next year, so feel the real atmosphere with the solemn singing of the choir at the theater.
